Portland Literacy Council trains volunteer tutors to help adults learn to read, write, and speak English — serving learners across the Portland metro area. If you are interested in any of the following opportunities, please contact Courtenay Carr Heuer.

Ways to Get Involved

  • Adult Literacy Tutor — One-on-one or classroom support, in-person or Zoom. Training available.
  • Annual Volunteer Tutor Conference Support — Help plan and run PLC’s annual gathering celebrating volunteer tutors.
  • Board of Directors — Up to 8 meetings/year. Potential roles may include President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Training Director, Fundraising Lead, Communications Lead, and GED® testing and tutoring Lead.
  • Committee Member — Three meetings/year for a focused project or initiative.
  • Communications Volunteer — Help build our presence through existing and emerging social media platforms like TikTok, Reddit, NextDoor, andBlueSky and LinkedIn.
  • Data Entry & Database Management — Support accurate record-keeping and learner/tutor tracking. (Is this truly an open volunteer opportunity, or will Barbara continue to do this?)
  • Donor — Tax-deductible gifts fund tutor training, scholarships, and GED® testing fees.
  • Estate Planning — Include Portland Literacy Council in your will or trust.
  • Fundraiser Host — Organize a dinner, community event, or Facebook fundraiser.
  • GED Support — Respond to requests for GED® testing fees assistance ($150–$200 value) and prep resources.
  • Logistics Support for Tutor Training Workshops — Help coordinate space, materials, and scheduling for tutor training sessions.
  • Marketing & Events Support — Assist with outreach materials, event promotion, and community visibility.
  • Partnership Outreach — Connect PLC with employers, schools, and social service agencies to expand our network and learner pipeline.
  • Program Evaluation & Impact Measurement — Help track outcomes and document the difference PLC makes for learners.
  • Videographer / Video Production — Create short videos showcasing learner stories, tutor spotlights, or program impact.
  • Volunteer Recruitment — Represent PLC at community events, libraries, and other venues to attract new tutors and supporters.
