Portland Literacy Council (PLC) is a nonprofit organization that supports adult literacy programs, tutors, and students in the Portland metropolitan area. PLC activities include delivering online and in-person tutor training workshops, supporting Pacific Northwest literacy programs, providing vouchers for GED® testing to low-income students, sponsoring an annual volunteer tutor conference, and publishing an online newsletter and announcements in support of our vision and mission.
As a non-profit organization, we are constantly seeking help in order to achieve our goals. There are many ways you can help:
- Become a volunteer literacy tutor: Our tutors are at the heart of what we do. Each year, PLC trains up to 90 new volunteer tutors who work with adults in libraries, community colleges, churches, and service centers across the Portland metro area. Learners range from English language learners to native speakers learning to read and write, adults working toward specific goals like passing the Citizenship exam or earning a high school equivalency through GED® Testing. No prior teaching experience is needed — we provide training and ongoing support, including low-cost Awesome Tutor workshops and scholarships to cover training costs. Learn more.
- Volunteer your time in a multitude of other ways: From serving on the Board of Directors to managing one of our programs, to event support, and other avenues; we always appreciate any and all expertise you can offer. Learn more.
