Volunteer Literacy Tutor Conference

On March 21, 2015, Portland Literacy Council co-sponsored the 2015 Volunteer Literacy Conference on the Reed College Campus. This conference supports Volunteer Literacy Tutors by offering a forum to exchange ideas, develop new teaching strategies, and hone tutoring skills. Volunteer Literacy Tutors in the Portland Metropolitan area provide one-to-one and group tutoring sessions to adult learners. The literacy skills for students range from preliterate to pre-GED.

Conference presentations and workshops addressed the needs of both ABE and ESL tutors and students. Workshops were presented, facilitated, or moderated by adult education and ESOL educators, and other professionals and adult literacy advocates. In addition to workshops, participants could attend activities such as a cultural exchange presentation  and a tutor discussion session.

Attendees selected from among fifteen workshops, divided among three time slots. The conference included a catered luncheon for which local students wrote and presented speeches about their learning experiences.
